A wife robbed two banks while she was eight months pregnant and duped her unwitting husband into being her getaway driver.

Anna A., 37, robbed two banks in the Lublin region of Poland in October and November 2023 after being inspired by gangster films she watched during her pregnancy, Polish media report.

She burst into the Cooperative Bank in Kurow brandishing a knife and demanded the cashier give her money before fleeing on foot with her haul.

Police launched a large manhunt with road closures and search dogs following the robbery, but officers were unable to find the thief, who was described as short and likely female.

Two weeks later, Anna A. targeted another branch of the same back in the town of Pulawy. Police said she carried an object similar to a firearm.

She made her husband an unwitting accomplice when she told him to pick her up after a check-up appointment at the hospital - in reality, he was acting as her getaway driver from a parking lot near the bank where she committed the first robbery.

While combing through CCTV footage, investigators noticed that the thief had a baby bump and managed to track Anna A. down. She was arrested a day after the second robbery in November 2023.

In total, she stole about £10,000, half of which was discovered in the basement of her house after she spent the other half on building materials for the family home.

A knife and remnants of clothes believed to have been used in the robberies were also found in the suitcase, according to Polish media reports.

Anna A. had told her husband that the money stored in a suitcase their basement was from a lottery win.

Both my son and my husband believed what I told them, she reportedly said in court.

She was sentenced to four years in prison for the bank robberies and causing bodily harm in 2024 and was ordered to pay a fine as compensation to the banks.

The housewife said she acted alone and her husband didnt know about her criminal activities.

She gave birth to her baby behind bars and has been allowed to care for her child while in prison.

The mother-of-three appealed the sentence, but a Lublin court upheld the verdict last Thursday. Her defence lawyer had asked for a more lenient sentence of three years, but
