Moira Salmond, whose maiden name is McGlashan, is from Peebles in the Scottish Borders.
She met the would-be Scottish National Party leader, 17 years her junior, in the 1970s when she was working in London as a civil servant.
Ms Salmond, then McGlashan, was a 24-year-old Mr Salmonds boss in the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland in London.
Mr Salmond had joined as an assistant economist, and the couple went on to marry in 1981.
Mrs Salmond is known to keep a low profile and gave no interviews or speeches during her time as First Wife.
According to the Express, she gave here sole newspaper interview in 1990 and revealed the couple enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble together - which she would invariably win.

Did Moira speak about Alex Salmonds sexual assault allegations?
Mr Salmond was accused of an array of sexual offences in the years after his seven-year term as First Minister ended in 2014.
Ms Salmond did not publicly comment on the allegations, but showed a clear sign of support by turning up to the High Court by his side in Edinburgh in 2020.
Mr Salmond was accused of 13 offences against nine women, including attempted rape and a series of sexual assaults.
He was cleared of all charges by a jury following the 11-day trial.
