When to expect the 2024 presidential election results for each state

The biggest election night 2024 mystery may not be whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris gains the White House - but when Americans will find out who won.

With polls showing the race a virtual coin flip between Trump and Harris, the November 5 election looks to be perhaps the closest in history. 

That will likely spell a long, drawn out round of mail-in ballot counts and even recounts depending on the state.

The 2020 election was not called for Joe Biden until four days later - on the following Saturday.

On Election Day in 2000, Democrat Al Gore conceded in the wee hours the next morning, but then spectacularly rescinded his not-legally-binding concession.

At least eight states (highlighted in orange) may not be able to declare a winner on election night between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris

That resulted in a battle over hanging chads, with the Supreme Court ultimately halting the Florida recount. The court determined that George W. Bush was the victor over Al Gore two months after the election by just 537 votes.

And when Americans will find out who their next president is a guessing game. 

The over/under is Saturday, Fox News Decision Desk head Arnon Mishkin told Politico of when the 2024 race will be called. 

He added that its the same time frame when the call was made [in 2020].

As every state follows different procedures for counting and reporting results, there will be a wide range of times that the winner is determined in each, whether on Tuesday night, into early Wednesday or beyond.

Millions of voters nationwide are sending in mail-in ballots, which take much longer to count than at in-person polling places, and which factor in more greatly on election night calls in a tight race.

Some, including swing states Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, wont begin counting absentee ballots until Election Day itself, which could delay results further given how consequential they may be to both candidates paths to victory.

And both the Trump and Harris camps are preparing court challenges of results in tightly-contested areas, which could delay the outcome even longer.

Recent polling averages have the candidates in a near-dead heat in most of the seven crucial swing states.

Several of those crucial states are already sounding the alarm that they may not have an answer until well after Election Day.

In battleground Michigan, the secretary of state admitted that her states results are expected to be certified at least one day after the election because of their slow counting process.

With all that in mind, DailyMail.com breaks down when the presidential election results in each state are expected:

Alabama 

When are polls open: Polls here are open from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: As many in Alabama vote in-person at the ballots, the results should be expected to come the night of Election Day. In 2020, the race was called for Trump just after 8 pm local time.  

Whats the latest: Republicans hold a super majority in the state, which only has one Democratic congressional member. In 2020, Trump won 62 percent of the vote. 

Alaska

When are polls open: The polls here are open from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Known for using a significant amount of absentee ballots, counting the vote here could take some time. In 2020, the race was called over a week after Election Day due to the difficulty tabulating the many mail-in votes.

Whats the latest: Recent polling shows Trump with a safe lead roughly seven or eight points ahead of Harris. In 2020, Trump bested Biden with a 10 point margin. 

Arizona

When are polls open: Polls in this battleground state are open from 6 am - 7 pm local time. 

When to expect results: In 2020, the race was called for Joe Biden around midnight local time after Trump showed an early lead. That year there was a massive amount of absentee ballots that needed to be counted after the polls closed. With a mix of early and day-of voting, expect results to come in late on election night. But if its a large volume of mail-in ballots, certification may take a while.

Whats the latest: Harris and Trump are in a tight matchup in this battleground state that will likely device the elections outcome. Recent polling averages show Trump and Harris within two points of each other in the state.

Other races to watch: Other competitive contests include the race for U.S. Senate, where Democrat Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake are running to replace outgoing independent U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. Lake lost the gubernatorial election in the state to Katie Hobbs in 2022.

Arkansas

When are polls open: Polls in this state are open from 7:30 am - 7:30 pm local time.

When to expect results: Anticipate relatively quick reporting with a call by election night due to fewer absentee ballots. In 2020, the race was called for Trump shortly after the polls closed on election night.

Whats the latest: Having voted for Republicans in every election since favorite son Bill Clinton was on the ballot in 1992 and 1996, Arkansas six electoral votes are expected to be delivered to Republicans. In 2020, Trump won here with 62 percent of the vote.

California

When are polls open: Polls in the Golden State are open from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Despite a large amount of expected absentee ballots, the results for California should come on Election Day. In 2020, the state was called for Joe Biden at 8 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Having been a Democratic stronghold for years, the state is expected to bring home its massive 54 electoral college votes for Oakland-born Kamala Harris, the states former senator and attorney general. In 2020, Biden took home 63 percent of the states votes. 

Other races to watch: California also has about half a dozen competitive House races this year. If Democrats want to regain control of the House this cycle, the paths to do so run through races in California and New York.

Colorado

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results should be expected election night assuming the large portion of mail-in ballots are tabulated in a timely manner. In 2020, the race was called around 7:30 pm local time.

Whats the latest: Harris is leading Trump by double-digits according to presidential polling averages. In 2020, Biden beat Trump by 13 points, 55 - 52. 

Connecticut 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: The results should be known early on in election night here. In 2020, the race was called as polls closed at 8 pm local time.

Whats the latest: A reliably blue state, Harris is expected to win the state by double-digits. Biden beat Trump here by 20 points in 2020.

Delaware

When to expect results: The results are likely to come quickly after the polls close in this small state. Similar to Connecticut, it was called at 8 pm local time just as the polls closed in 2020. 

Whats the latest: Harris is expected to win the state by a large margin. Biden secured his home state Delaware by 19 points in 2020, and a similar result could be expected this year. 

Florida

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: The Sunshine State typically returns its results in a timely manner, but Hurricanes Helene and Milton there could be anomalies. In 2020, the results were in shortly after midnight local time. 

Whats the latest: Presidential polling averages show Trump leading Harris by 5 points. After securing the state by just one point in 2016 and three points in 2020, Trump is looking to win his home state a third time.

Georgia 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time, though some municipalities may vary. 

When to expect results: Results in Georgia may take days if not weeks to figure out, but with changes in voting laws, some results may be known on election night. In 2020, results here were not known until weeks after the fact on November 19. 

Whats the latest: This battleground state will also have a big say in who becomes president given how closely the candidates are polling. In 2020, Biden won by a fractional margin of just 12,000 or so votes, but presidential polling averages show Trump up by a point and a half. 

Hawaii

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Despite the state being comprised of an island change posing geographic and logistical obstacles, the results here should be known on election night or soon thereafter. The race was called here on Election Day 2020.  

Whats the latest: Another Democratic stronghold, Harris is expected to beat Trump here by a major margin. Biden, for example, beat Trump by 30 points here in the last election. 

Idaho 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 8 am - 8 pm local time. 

When to expect results: Idaho is quick at tabulating votes, and results should be expected here shortly after polls close. In 2020, the race was called here by 9 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: A state run by a Republican super majority, Trump is expected to win Idaho by a huge margin. In the last election the former president won with an over 30 point lead. 

Illinois 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Likely the presidential race results will come on election night here. In 2020, the race was called early in the evening on Election Day.  

Whats the latest: A longtime Democratic stronghold, polling indicates a double-digit win for Harris on Election Day. In 2020, Biden won the state by 17 points, pulling in about one million more votes than Trump.

Indiana

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 6 pm local time.

When to expect results: Expect most counties to report their ballots by election night. In 2020, the race was called shortly before 9 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Most major polls have shown Trump with a 15 point lead or higher in the state. He won it in 2020 by 16 points and should be expected to perform similarly.

Iowa

When to expect results: The results should be known here on election night. In 2020, the race was called around 11:30 pm local time on Election Day.

Whats the latest: Polling indicates Trump has a healthy lead roughly five points ahead of Harris. The Republican handedly won the state in 2020, when he beat Biden by nine points. 

Kansas

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Election results should be known by the night of due to the high percentage of in-person voters. The race was called around 9 pm local time on Election Day 2020.

Whats the latest: Polls indicate Trump has a robust double-digit lead in the state. He won by a commanding 15 points in 2020.  

Kentucky 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 6 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results should come here with minimal delays. In 2020 Kentucky was the first race called in the entire country, coming at 7 pm ET. 

Whats the latest: Polls show Trump with a double-digit lead over Harris. The ex-president won the state by roughly 25 points in 2020. 

Louisiana 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: The results should com promptly on election night. Louisianas presidential race was called just as polls closed in 2020 at 8 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: This is another deeply red state where Trump is expected to win by double-digits. The Bayou State turned out for Trump in 2020, giving him a victory with roughly a 20 point margin. 

Maine 

When are polls open: Polls are open here generally from 6 am - 8pm local time. Some municipalities, however, may vary. 

When to expect results: The presidential election results may come on election night in Maine, though it is not a certainty as the race in 2020 was not called until 3 am local time. One of the two states that uses ranked-choice voting, some state races may take much longer if candidates do not secure over 50 percent of the votes.

Whats the latest: Maine has a peculiar way of counting its four electoral votes, including two given to the statewide winner and one each awarded to the winner of the states two congressional districts. Forecasts show Harris winning three of the states votes and Trump securing one of the congressional districts, which would be the same breakdown of votes seen between Biden and Trump in 2020. 

Other races to watch: Democrat Rep. Jared Golden, is looking to retain his conservative-leaning district in a competition against Republican Austin Theriault. The moderate has served since 2019 in a district that voted Trump in 2016 and 2020.

Maryland 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: The results here should be in on election night. In 2020, the results were known early, coming in around 8 pm local time just as the polls closed. 

Whats the latest: Harris holds a commanding 30 point lead over Trump here. Those numbers are in line with Bidens 2020 results, where he won 65 percent of the vote. 

Massachusetts 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results will likely come out here just after the polls close barring any major issues. In 2020, the race was called here at 8 pm local time.

Whats the latest: The state of the Kennedy lineage is not deviating from the Democratic candidate this go around, despite Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s endorsement of Trump. Polls indicate that Harris maintains close to a 30 point lead, a similar margin to how the 2020 election was decided. 

Michigan

When are polls open: Polls here run from 7 am - 8 or 9 pm depending on which time zone residents live.

When to expect results: Delays should be expected here as a significant portion of mail-in voting is expected. In 2020, the result in Michigan were not called until 6 pm the day after Election Day, but new laws since passed may enable a speedier tabulation.

Whats the latest: This battleground states 15 electoral votes will heavily influence the outcome of the election, and polling averages show the presidential contest is a dead heat. Biden narrowly won the state in 2020 by two points. 

Other races to watch: Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers face off to replace retiring Democratic incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow. This race has also narrowed significantly, and will determine the makeup of the Senate.

Minnesota 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time, with some variation among smaller precincts. 

When to expect results: Results should be known early on and the race should be called by election night. In 2020, the race was called for Biden shortly after 11 pm local time.

Whats the latest: Presidential polling averages show Harris maintains a five point lead over Trump. The state is expected to go blue, and did so in 2020 giving Biden a seven point victory. 

Mississippi 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results should be known here on election night. In 2020 the race was called immediately after polls closed around 7 pm. 

Whats the latest: The state is a Republican stronghold and is expected to back Trump with a large margin. The former president won here in 2020 by a 16 point margin.  

Missouri 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: The winner here should be announced the night of. In 2020, the race was called here by 9 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Trump holds a double-digit lead over Harris here. In 2020, Trump beat Biden here by around 15 points. 

Montana

When are polls open: The polls here run from 7 am to 8pm local time with some minor changes in municipalities with few residents. 

When to expect results: The presidential election results are expected to come in on election night, but the rural area vote counting might extend into the following day. In 2020, the results were known around 9 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Presidential polling averages show Trump with a 17-point lead over Harris. This is in line with the 2020 drubbing the Republican gave to Biden, besting him by a similar margin.

Other races to watch: Democrats currently fear that their Senate majority could be lost here. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is behind eight points and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy has a chance to flip the seat, and the upper-chamber of Congress red if he wins. 

Nebraska 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm or 8 am - 8 pm local time depending on time zone.

When to expect results: Results are typically reported by election night. Despite being a state that does not award all of its electoral votes to the statewide winner - like Maine - In 2020, the results were known early on. 

Whats the latest: The state awards five electoral seats, including two awarded to the statewide winner and one each awarded to the winner of each of the states three congressional districts. In 2020, Trump won four out of five, with Biden winning the liberal-leaning Omaha area 2nd congressional district.

Nevada 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: The results in this critical battleground state could take some time due to the large amount of mail-in ballots expected. In 2020, results were not know until 9 am local time the Saturday after Election Day. 

Whats the latest: Polling indicates the seven electoral votes available here - the smallest prize of all the battleground states - are still up for grabs as Trump and Harris are only separated by a fraction of a point. In 2020, Biden bested Trump here by roughly 33,000 votes. 

Other races to watch: In a race for a seat in the closely divided U.S. Senate, Democratic incumbent Jacky Rosen seeks a second term against Republican Sam Brown, a retired Army captain who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for the states other U.S. Senate seat in 2022.

New Hampshire

When to expect results: New Hampshire usually returns results on the night of. In 2020, the results were in by 10:30 local time. 

Whats the latest: Harris holds a commanding six point lead over Trump. Biden won by seven points here in 2020. 

New Jersey 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: New Jerseys election results should come in fairly quickly on election night. In 2020, the race was called at 8 pm local time, in short order after the polls closed.  

Whats the latest: The Garden State is yet another Democratic stronghold and polling there has heavily favored Harris. In 2020, Biden won the state by a dominant 16 point margin. 

New Mexico 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Expect results from New Mexico to come on election night. In 2020, the race was called here as polls closed around 7 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: On average Harris has polled around seven points better than Trump throughout the cycle. Biden, on the other hand, won the state with an 11 point margin in 2020. 

New York

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 9 pm local time.

When to expect results: New Yorks results should come on election night but could face some delays pending how counting goes in the New York City area. Though, in 2020 the state was called as the polls closed around 9 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Despite Trumps campaign stops in The Bronx and soon Madison Square Garden, the Empire State is firmly for Harris. Presidential polling averages show Harris up around 15 points in the state. 

North Carolina 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6:30 am - 7:30 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results from mail-in ballots will begin to show early on and ballots cast at the polls will be tabulated soon thereafter, though the total mail-in vote may not be known for days. In 2020, the race was not called until the Friday after Election Day. 

Whats the latest: Trump and Harris are tied in the battleground state, though Democrats are hopeful they can flip it blue. In 2020, Trump squeaked out a 1-point victory.

North Dakota

When are polls open: Polls in the state open between 7 am - 9 pm and close between 7 pm - 9 pm local time.  

When to expect results: The results should come in here very quickly. The race was called here when the polls closed around 9 pm local time in 2020. 

Whats the latest: Polling averages show Trump with a staggering lead over Harris. In the last election, Trump took home nearly two out of every three votes in the state, besting Biden 65 to 31. 

Ohio 

When are polls open: Polls are open here from 6:30 am - 7:30 pm local time. 

When to expect results: The presidential contest should be called on election night. in 2020, the race was called for Trump shortly after midnight at 12:19 am local time.

Whats the latest: Presidential polling averages in the formerly purple state show the former president with an eight point lead. In 2020, the Republican bested Biden with a similar eight point victory, 53 - 45.

Other races to watch: Four-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is facing what may be his toughest reelection race yet. Cleveland businessman and Republican Bernie Moreno has narrowed to just a point difference between the two.

Oklahoma 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Oklahomas presidential election results should be known on election night. In 2020, the race was called right at 7 pm local time as the polls closed for the day.

Whats the latest: Polls in the solidly red state have consistently shown Trump with a double-digit lead over Harris here. In the last election between he and Biden, Trump secured nearly two thirds of all votes cast. 

Oregon 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: The race should be called on election night assuming counting goes smoothly in the high-population areas near Portland. The race was called here right as polls closed in 2020 at 8 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Harris has shown a strong lead in the presidential polling averages here. President Biden won the state in a decisive manner, managing a 16 point victory.  

Pennsylvania 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Expect delays while waiting for results in the Keystone State, which is expecting many mail-in ballots. In 2020, the results here were not known until 11 am local time on the Saturday after Election Day.

Whats the latest: This critical battleground state is a toss-up. Presidential polling averages show Harris and Trump within one point of each other and there is no clear leader. 

Other races to watch: Democratic incumbent Sen. Bob Casey is seeking a fourth term against Republican Dave McCormick, who previously ran for governor. Polls have narrowed and this is a must-win race for Democrats to maintain Senate control, and Republicans are hopeful McCormick has what it takes after Dr. Mehmet Oz lost the Senate seat to former Braddock mayor John Fetterman.

Rhode Island 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results should come out of Rhode Island fairly quickly on election night. The state was called right as polls closed at 8 pm local time in 2020. 

Whats the latest: The small east coast state is a blue haven and has not gone for a Republican president since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Harris holds a double-digit polling lead here, which is in line with Bidens roughly 20 point victory in 2020.  

South Carolina 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: South Carolinas results should come on election night. In 2020, the states race was called within an hour of polls closing, close to 8 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Trump holds a commanding lead in the state that has been reliably Republican and has not gone for a Democratic candidate since the 1970s.  In 2020, Trump won here with a 12 point margin.

South Dakota 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: South Dakotas results likely will be known right after the polls close in the state. That was the case in 2020, when the race was called at 7 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Voters here have backed Trump in  2016 and 2020 and are expected to do so again. In those years they delivered over 60 percent of the vote to the Republican, and polling indicates they are likely going to again. 

Tennessee

When are polls open: Polls in the state vary by county and do not have a uniform opening or closing time. 

When to expect results: Results should come shortly after the polls close here. In 2020, the race was called by 8 pm ET. 

Whats the latest: Polling in the Volunteer State show large margins for Trump. That would be in line with the results of the past several elections where the Republican secured over 60 percent of the vote.  

Texas 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Spanning two time zones the state will get some results in while some are still voting, regardless, many of the votes should be in on election night. In 2020, the race was called the day of local time. 

Whats the latest: Trump holds a five point lead over Harris heading down the stretch. The state went for the Republican in 2020 by a six point margin. 

Other races to watch: The race between Republican incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz and  Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, a former NFL linebacker and civil rights attorney who flipped a competitive U.S. House seat to take office in 2018, has narrowed and could be Democrats best hope to retain Senate control should they win.

Utah 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results here should be known on Election Day. In 2020, the results came in just an hour after polls closed around 9:08 pm local time. 

Whats the latest: Trump has held a large polling margin here the majority of the race. In 2020, he beat Biden here by a 20 point margin. 

Vermont 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run between 5 am to 10 am, depending on location, and close statewide at 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results here should be known almost instantly. Vermont was the first state called for Joe Biden in 2020 at exactly 7 pm local time when the polls closed. 

Whats the latest: The state has backed Democrats since the 1980s and is almost certainly going for Harris. Biden won the state with a whopping 66 percent of the vote in 2020. 

Virginia 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results here should be expected on election night. In 2020, the race was called shortly after the polls closed around 7:30 pm local time.

Whats the latest: Having a Republican governor and two Democratic senators, the state could be though to be a toss-up, but it is not. Presidential polling averages show Harris up six points in Virginia.

Washington

When are polls open: Polls in the state have varied opening times based on location but all polls close at 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Election results should be known here quickly after the polls close. That was the case in 2020 when Biden was declared winner at 8 pm local time.

Whats the latest: The namesake for the first U.S. president has been a Democrat stronghold for decades and is expected to back Harris by a large margin. Biden won the state by 20 points in 2020.

West Virginia 

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 6:30 am - 7:30 pm local time.

When to expect results: West Virginias results should be known almost immediately after polls close. In 2020, it was the second state called for Donald Trump at 7:30 pm local time, just as the polls closed.  

Whats the latest: Donald Trump is almost certain to win this state, and recent polling shows him with a roughly 30 point lead. In 2020, West Virginia was one of Trumps best states where he grabbed almost 70 percent of the votes.  

Wisconsin

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 8 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results are not expected to be finalized on Election Day and legal battles could ensue over the closely divided battleground state. In 2020, Biden was confirmed the winner the day after the election around noon local time. 

Whats the latest: The fight for this state is too close to say whether it leans Republican or Democrat. In 2020, Biden won the state by just around 20,000 votes. 

Other races to watch: Third-term Democratic incumbent Tammy Baldwin is facing off against Republican businessman Eric Hovde. The race could be as a toss-up and will be influenced by who wins the presidential contest there.

On the first day of early voting, Nevada recorded the most in-person voters since adopting universal mail voting for the 2020 election

Wyoming

When are polls open: Polls in the state run from 7 am - 7 pm local time.

When to expect results: Results should be known here almost instantly. In 2020, the state was called the minute polls closed at 7 pm. 

Whats the latest: Wyoming was Trumps best state in 2020, where he won 70 percent of the vote compared to Bidens 27. A similar margin could be expected this year, as polling indicates the former president is on track to beat Harris.
