With polls showing the race a virtual coin flip between Trump and Harris, the November 5 election looks to be perhaps the closest in history.
That will likely spell a long, drawn out round of mail-in ballot counts and even recounts depending on the state.
The 2020 election was not called for Joe Biden until four days later - on the following Saturday.
On Election Day in 2000, Democrat Al Gore conceded in the wee hours the next morning, but then spectacularly rescinded his not-legally-binding concession.
At least eight states (highlighted in orange) may not be able to declare a winner on election night between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris
That resulted in a battle over hanging chads, with the Supreme Court ultimately halting the Florida recount. The court determined that George W. Bush was the victor over Al Gore two months after the election by just 537 votes.
And when Americans will find out who their next president is a guessing game.
The over/under is Saturday, Fox News Decision Desk head Arnon Mishkin told Politico of when the 2024 race will be called.
He added that its the same time frame when the call was made [in 2020].
As every state follows different procedures for counting and reporting results, there will be a wide range of times that the winner is determined in each, whether on Tuesday night, into early Wednesday or beyond.
Millions of voters nationwide are sending in mail-in ballots, which take much longer to count than at in-person polling places, and which factor in more greatly on election night calls in a tight race.
Some, including swing states Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, wont begin counting absentee ballots until Election Day itself, which could delay results further given how consequential they may be to both candidates paths to victory.
And both the Trump and Harris camps are preparing court challenges of results in tightly-contested areas, which could delay the outcome even longer.
Recent polling averages have the candidates in a near-dead heat in most of the seven crucial swing states.
Both Harris and Trump have been filling the weeks before Election Day with campaign events in crucial battleground states

Several of those crucial states are already sounding the alarm that they may not have an answer until well after Election Day.
In battleground Michigan, the secretary of state admitted that her states results are expected to be certified at least one day after the election because of their slow counting process.

Alabama

Alaska

Arizona

Arkansas

When to expect results: Anticipate relatively quick reporting with a call by election night due to fewer absentee ballots. In 2020, the race was called for Trump shortly after the polls closed on election night.
Whats the latest: Having voted for Republicans in every election since favorite son Bill Clinton was on the ballot in 1992 and 1996, Arkansas six electoral votes are expected to be delivered to Republicans. In 2020, Trump won here with 62 percent of the vote.
California
