Sir Keir Starmer today hailed the importance of trade and collaboration between allies in a call with Canadas Justin Trudeau - in an apparent swipe at Donald Trump.
The PM spoke to his Canadian counterpart this afternoon during which Sir Keir praised Mr Trudeaus efforts to halt the flow of drugs across his countrys borders.
Their discussion came just days after Mr Trudeau won a 30-day reprieve from Mr Trumps threat to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canada.
The US President sparked global panic by announcing sweeping new tariffs on all goods imported into America from Canada, China, and Mexico.
But he later backtracked from a damaging trade war by agreeing a deal with both Canada and Mexico, although he pushed ahead with action against Beijing.
The agreement with Ottawa came as Mr Trudeau said Canada was implementing a $1.3billion (£727million) border plan.
This incuded nearly 10,000 frontline workers and more resources to halt the flow of fentanyl, a drug 50 times stronger than heroin, which Mr Trump has cited as a major concern.
Mr Trudeau also said Canada would employ a fentanyl tsar and launch a joint strike force with the US to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.
