Three dead after medical helicopter crashes on way to pick up a patient in Kentucky

Three first responders on their way to pick up a patient died in a fiery helicopter crash.  

Members of Air Evac Lifeteam 133 based in Grant County, Kentucky were responding to an emergency call around 6 p.m. on Monday when the fatal crash occurred.

The Bell 206 helicopter struck a guy-wire and crashed then experienced a post crash fire in Owenton, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

A guy-wire is a tension cable that adds stability and safety to tall, free-standing structures.

The victims, pilot Gale Alleman, flight nurse Bethany Aicken and flight paramedic James Welsh, were all pronounced dead at the scene, the Kentucky State Police said.

Our primary focus now is on supporting the families who were impacted, as well as our team members, Air Evac Lifeteam said on Facebook.

Critical incident stress management teams have been sent to assist our team members during this difficult time.

This was a terribly tragic accident, and our deepest sympathies go out to the employees families and friends.

According to a GoFundMe set up for Welshs family, he leaves behind his pregnant wife who is expecting their first child.

James’ life was tragically cut short doing something he loved—helping those in need during the worst moments of their lives, said the fundraiser.

James was one of a kind. He was a best friend to everyone, an outstanding family man, and someone you could rely on for anything.

Alleman has been a certified airline pilot since at least 2008, reported WCPO.

The Owenton, Owen County Fire and Rescue Departments said the crash happened near a local restaurant called Amigos.

Witnesses told the local news outlet they heard the loud crash and there was a large emergency response near the scene.  

Heartbreaking news last night out of Owen County, where a fatal helicopter crash took the lives of three crew members from Air Evac Lifeteam, Gov. Andy Beshear said.
