Shock twist in case of 13-year-old girl whose father said she didnt feel safe after she disappeared in Ohio

An Ohio father has been accused of abducting, raping and killing his 13-year-old daughter after her body was found inside an abandoned house.

Kei’Mani Latigue, 13, was reported missing after her grandmother, Dorothy Latigue, raised the alarm on March 16 when she arrived to find the front door of their Toledo home unlocked. 

The teenagers father Darnell Jones, 33, then claimed she had called him earlier that evening and said she was scared to be home alone. 

He told police he saw his daughter that same night and was believed to be the last person to see her alive, ABC 13 reported. 

Latigue, who was the childs legal guardian, said she came home from work that night her granddaughter was allegedly nowhere to be found. 

In an interview with ABC 13, KeiManis mother, Tiara Kasten, said her mother gave [Jones] permission to come to the house. 

Jones had given investigators conflicting stories about where her daughter was and what he did with her when he was further questioned. He was initially only charged with abduction. 

On Friday, the Toledo community launched an unsuccessful search party for KeiMani, who has been described as a kind and caring rule-follower, which is why her mother and grandmother were certain she did not just run away.

I have not slept in three days, I have not eaten in three days, Kasten said on Friday. 

I have never had a seizure before and I’ve had three.

Outside of the home, an anxious Kasten waited for authorities to confirm if the body was her daughters.

I just want to know if it’s my baby, she told WISTV before KeiManis identity was verified. 

This is one of the most horrific cases I’ve ever heard of, Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) official Brian Steel told ABC 13. 

This is a 14-year-old who was murdered, raped, had her hands cut off and her throat almost cut off.

KeiManis 14th birthday was just days away from when her body was discovered.

The childs grandmother said she regrets letting her see her father the night she went missing 

An autopsy revealed she died of incised wounds of the neck and her death was ruled a homicide. Police charged Jones with murder and felonious assault. 

The alleged murderer was apprehended on Tuesday morning in Columbus and was shot by police during his arrest because he allegedly pulled a gun on the officers, police said in a press conference. 

Jones was taken to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Franklin County on Wednesday.

The Toledo home KeiMani was found in will be demolished at the end of her murder investigation, a city spokesperson told ABC 13. 

What happened here was an unspeakable tragedy and we hope removing the structure can be part of the effort to help the community heal, they said. 

Meanwhile, KeiManis grandmother has claimed she is scared for her own safety as a mob was allegedly formed outside of her home after her granddaughters body was found.

She told WTOL11 police escorted her out of her home in handcuffs on Monday night, not because she was being arrested, but because she was concerned the people gathered outside of her home would harm her.

The grandmother tearfully confessed she regretted letting KeiMani see her father on March 16. 

I feel deceived, I feel like this was pre-planned, she told WTOL11. 

The teenager was a basketball player at Spring Elementary school and was set to be recognized this week at the schools Honor Roll Assembly. 

Kei’Mani will be remembered as being very personable and someone who got along well with others. 

She was phenomenal. She was like no other kid her age, Latigue said.
