Severe thunderstorms and a heatwave to batter Australia - what the weather is like in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and more

Severe thunderstorms will lash the east coast of Australia while a heatwave will bring scorching temperatures along the north of the country.

Severe thunderstorms will lash the east coast of Australia while a heatwave will bring scorching temperatures along the north of the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) on Tuesday forecast a storm system stretching across the east coast as far as Gladstone in Queensland to NSWs Hunter Region.

The most severe storms have been predicted to hit areas close to the border, such as the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, on Tuesday before the system moves inland.

BOM senior meteorologist, Miriam Bradbury, told Daily Mail Australia the severe storm isnt run of the mill and could lead to dangerous conditions in the region.

Ms Bradbury warned of winds strong enough to bring down tree branches and power lines, intense rains causing flash flooding and hail larger than 2cm wide.

The low trough causing the storms is also causing heatwaves across Australias north coast.

Ms Bradbury said the weather system acts differently in more northern regions and has instead stagnated sweltering conditions.

The heatwaves are expected to intensify throughout the week with another system tipped to sweep through and break the heatwave.

Ms Bradbury said heavy rain will still be present for coastal areas while the chance of a severe storm will remain dangerous for parts of Central Queensland and the Southern Interior on Wednesday.

However, the risk factor is expected to decrease later in the week as it moves further from populated areas and loses power.

Ms Bradbury explained the vastly different weather systems was in part due to the sheer size of Australia allowing for numerous patterns to occur at once.

The bureau also issued a number of wind warnings for the Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast and Hunter Coast in NSW on Tuesday.

Those warning are expected to drop off on Wednesday when the Moreton Bay and Gold Coast regions in Queensland will experience intense winds.

Sheep grazers across swathes of inland NSW have been warned that cold temperatures, showers and winds could cause loss of livestock.

Coastal areas of northern NSW and southern QLD are tipped to be hit by severe storms on Tuesday followed by heavy rainfall on Wednesday as the system moves inland
