Republican lawmaker collapses and rushed to the hospital with stroke-like symptoms

Longtime South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson collapsed at a Washington, D.

Longtime South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson collapsed at a Washington, D.C., event Tuesday before being rushed to the hospital. 

Wilson, 77, started experiencing stroke-like symptoms, at the Ukraine House in D.C. his son later confirmed. 

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, the congressmans son, confirmed the incident to reporters before a presidential debate watch party. 

I just spoke to my mom who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms, Alan Wilson said.

I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals.

The Republican lawmakers office later confirmed the account on his official X account. 

Congressman Joe Wilson, R-S.C. was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC, the lawmakers X account posted late Tuesday night. 

Wilsons fellow South Carolina lawmakers were quick to react and send their prayers.

Prayers up for Congressman Wilson and his family tonight, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., posted on X. 

Have spoken to the family and I ask we all send a positive vibe and a prayer his way tonight and may he recover as fast as humanly possible.

The South Carolina GOP posted on X: Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dean of the SC Delegation, Congressman Joe Wilson for a quick and complete recovery.

Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., posted.

Wilson had voted on legislation on the House floor just hours before his hospitalization.

On Monday, Wilson attended a press event touting the findings of a congressional report on the Biden-Harris Afghanistan withdrawal plan in 2021. 

Currently, of the 435 seats in Congress, 220 Republicans to 211 Democrats. There are four vacancies.

It is unclear whether Wilson will be able to vote today given his condition.
