The family of a greatly loved man who died following a serious assault close to a primary school in Essex has paid tribute to him, as a man appeared in court today charged with his murder.

Francis Reilly, 63, died following the incident in Ingrave Road, Brentwood, on Thursday afternoon.  

 In a statement today, his grieving family said: Frankie was a loving father, brother, grandfather and uncle.

He was greatly loved by his whole family and will be sadly missed.

We would ask for privacy at this time so we can continue to grieve as a family.

Police charged John Moore, 38, of Ingrave Road, Brentwood on Saturday and he appeared this morning at Basildon Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.

Moore was remanded in custody until a plea and trial preparation hearing on 26 November.

Officers were called to reports of an incident in Ingrave Road, which took place just metres away from Hogarth Primary School where the school day had ended just minutes before.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance service, responded to the incident in Ingrave Road, where a cordon remains on Saturday.

On Saturday, several floral tributes were laid at the scene with condolences to the family of Mr Reilly.

Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell said police were continuing to investigate the circumstances of his death.

In a statement she said: Our officers arrived at the scene within two minutes and an arrest was made just over an hour after the report came into police.

We are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or have any dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to contact us.

She added: Whenever an incident of this nature occurs, no matter how rare they are, there is very understandable concern.

But we responded very quickly to what we understand to have been an isolated incident of violence and we are confident there is no ongoing threat to the wider community in Brentwood.
