The Military Police officer, whose name has not been released, appeared next to a car in the southern São Paulo neighborhood of Maria Helena Parque on Friday when the suspect pulled up on a motorcycle.

Footage showed the bandit aiming his .38 caliber gun at the cop, who fired at least 11 shots as the suspect returned fire.

The stickup man is then seen falling off his motorcycle and dropping to the ground before removing his helmet and putting his hands in the air. 

The officer approached the suspect and kicked his gun away.

The suspect was rushed by paramedics to Campo Limpo Hospital, where he died from the gunshot wounds, the São Paulo State Public Safety Department said.

The shooting was the latest in a string of robbery attempts in which suspects have been killed in São Paulo and neighboring cities.

On August 10, a 20-year-old man rode his motorcycle up to a 28-year-old off-duty Military Police officer and his wife to stick them up and was fatally shot.

On August 4, a 16-year-old boy was shot dead after a civilian disarmed him during an attempted cell phone robbery.

According to São Paulo State Public Safety Department figures, a total of 58,602 robberies were reported in the first six months of the year.
