Miracle weight-loss drugs could lead to debilitating brittle bones and fractures, experts warn

Experts warn that miracle weight-loss drugs could lead to fractures and brittle bones.

Experts warn that miracle weight-loss drugs could lead to fractures and brittle bones.

The drugs – like Ozempic or Wegovy – can slash body weight by 20 per cent, but studies have found that they also have a long-term impact on bone density.

Research presented to the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research raised significant concerns about the potential side-effects of these treatments.

One of the studies – published in the medical journal JAMA – assessed 200 people using the drugs and found that they had reduced hip and spine bone mineral density when compared to a placebo or exercise alone.

This means patients taking weight-loss injections could be at an increased risk of the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis.

The weight-loss benefits are undeniable, but the evidence also shows loss of lean mass and bone density, which is concerning, particularly for patients with conditions like osteoporosis, who are vulnerable to fractures, says Dr Taher Mahmud, founder of the London Osteoporosis Clinic.

The data raises a concern for those people who already have an elevated risk of osteoporosis or fractures, such as those with obesity or type 2 diabetes.

Ozempic and Wegovy are a type of drug known as GLP-1 agonist, which reduces hunger sensations.

Last week the Government announced it would offer the drugs to unemployed people.

But experts say giving these injections to thousands could increase cases of osteoporosis, which can lead to dangerous bone fractures and falls.

Dr Mahmud says it is crucial patients on GLP-1 drugs should exercise. The importance of strength training as well as cardiovascular exercise should be promoted to help protect against muscle and bone loss.

Tackling obesity is something we as a nation must address.

But it is essential that we combine medicine with education and support to ensure that those taking GLP-1 agonists know about the importance of good nutrition and weight-bearing exercise.
