Cesar Moises Hernandez, 34, fled at around 10.45am while he was being transported to a hearing at Kern County Superior Courthouse in Delano.
Upon arrival, Hernandez evaded staff custody, jumped out of the van, and is currently at large, the California Department of Corrections has said.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence for first degree murder at North Kern State Prison after being convicted in 2019, according to the department.
Authorities did not say how to was able to escape and have warned locals to stay alert and report any suspicious activity they see.
Hernandez is considered dangerous. If you see him, do not approach, The Delano Police Department has said.

He has been described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing approximately 161 pounds, and has brown eyes, and black hair.
Hernandez was last seen wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and white thermals and was till at large as of Tuesday afternoon.
Delano is Kern County’s second-largest city and is located around 25 miles north of Bakersfield and 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
