Michelle Purvis was walking home on Albion Road, North Shields, North Tyneside in May last year when she was hit by Gary Denley, who was driving an orange 250cc motorbike with no registration plates and several defects.

Ms Purvis spent 19 days in hospital and was left with a catalogue of injuries including fractures to the base of her skull, bleeding on the brain, broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a break in her left leg, which required surgery.

The 41-year-old also permanently lost her sight in her right eye.

Shocking images taken from her hospital bed show Ms Purvis covered in bruises and with scars on her legs, with a black eye and an eye patch.

She said the incident has changed her life and that she can no longer drive due to her vision loss.

I had brain damage and have lost sight in my right eye, she said. I broke three ribs, my collar bone and my legs. I was in a wheelchair for a while and still have to use it when I travel long distances, and have to rely on crutches for support.

I cant see what I am doing when Im cutting food in the kitchen and keep cutting myself with a knife. I also cant see a cup when Im trying to pour a drink.

I cannot drive anymore due to my vision. I am really cautious when I am outside and cannot leave my home by myself anymore.

It has knocked my confidence. I have a scar on my head from my skull fracture and on my leg from where they had to put metal above my knee.

Its taken me a long time to recover from the extent of my injuries but the mental trauma has taken longer.

Speaking of the day of the incident, she added: We were out getting food from the shops and we decided to walk home because it was a really sunny day. I didnt see him coming as his driving was so erratic.

I dont even remember being hit by him. I woke up a few days later in hospital in agony and couldnt remember what had happened.

Even when the healthcare staff and my partner told me what happened, I kept forgetting.

It was terrible. I couldnt move and kept thinking I was paralysed. I couldnt even wash my own hair.

Denley, 22, of Avon Avenue, North Shields, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drug driving, and having no insurance or licence.

He was jailed for three years and eight months at Newcastle Crown Court earlier this week, and handed a four year and ten month long road ban.

Sentencing, Judge Gavin Doi told the motorist: That day you changed her life forever.

Im going to impose a prison sentence on you today. You will serve that sentence and you will then be released to get on with your life.

There will never be a day of release for her. She will never be released from the suffering you caused.

She has been left with permanent and life changing injuries by your selfish actions. It was only by pure luck you didnt kill her that day.

Denley had previously been given a suspended jail sentence in October last year for dangerous driving in a Seat car.

Ms Purvis has slammed the courts for allowing him to walk free on that occasion, which enabled him to commit his latest offence.

Something should have been done about him and he would have been off the streets, she said. He has a previous conviction for a road traffic offence.

Its frustrating. If something had been done he wouldnt have done this to me.

He has been banned from driving for over four years but that wont stop him as he was already driving without insurance.

I hope that someone sees my story and thinks twice about driving dangerously.
