Grueling police academy exercise kills young recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia after he was left with injuries similar to 100mph car crash while boxing

An investigation has been launched into the mysterious death of a Massachusetts State Police recruit who suffered a medical crisis during a defensive tactics training exercise.

An investigation has been launched into the mysterious death of a Massachusetts State Police recruit who suffered a medical crisis during a defensive tactics training exercise.

Enrique Delgado-Garcia, 25, died in hospital on Friday, one day after the boxing exercise at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree, about 80 miles west of Boston.

Delgado-Garcia was so badly injured he was left with severe brain trauma, a fractured neck together with the loss of several teeth. Doctors say his injuries were so severe it was tantamount to him being involved in a 100mph car crash.

The district attorney assigned to review the case has now ordered another agency must investigate his death because Delgado-Garcia had worked in the DAs office for 18 months as a victim witness advocate and was well known to staff.

He began his training to pursue a life-long dream of joining the MSP in April.

A state police spokesperson said the academys on-site medical team responded immediately after Delgado-Garcia became unresponsive during the training exercise last Thursday.

The recruit had been wearing boxing gloves, headgear and a protective athletic cup at the time.

The medical team determined that he required urgent medical care and took him to the hospital, where he died on Friday.

Delgado-Garcias mother told reporters with NBC10 Boston that he was hit and badly injured.

I dont understand why it was so rough if it was just training? Sandra Garcia said through tears in Spanish.

I want them to explain it to me, that the state explains to me what happened with my son... Why did he hit him so hard that it killed him, that it destroyed his brain and broke all of my sons teeth and he had a neck fracture too, my son.

She continued: The doctor says that the injury my son received was more like something he would have gotten if he had been in crash with a car that was traveling 100 miles per hour, that the blow so powerful that the boy delivered to my son.

Garcia and other family members at the news conference declined to speak.

Im ashamed of MSP and I feel like they need to investigate this thoroughly and get justice because its not right how theyre treating these troops, said a friend of Delgado to Telemundo.

If my friend could end up like this, it could be anyones son or daughter, he added.

Police training can cover a range of physical encounters to defend against tackles, punches and other attacks.

The type of exercise Delgado-Garcia had been taking part in has not been specified but a video of him taking part in training is said to exist.

Early said an autopsy report has also not been finalized.

We dont have a cause and manner of death to release at this time, he said.

Regarding the training exercise, he said: We know it was in the boxing ring. It was videotaped. Early said he hadnt yet seen the video.

Early described him as a fine, upstanding young man with a smile that lit up a room.

These guys are hurting, he said, referring to the workers in the room. Enrique Delgado-Garcia was loved by everyone in our office, he said.

Wed try and get him to go home, saying, Enrique, what are you doing here? Its time to go home. Hed say, "No, Mr. Early, Ill be leaving soon. I got a few things I still need to do."

I begged Enrique to stay (at the DAs office). I said, Cmon, youve got a home here. We talked about him coming back being a Massachusetts State Police detective in our office. He was such a fine, upstanding young man. This was just an amazing kid.

Delgado-Garcias class is scheduled to graduate on October 9.

The Massachusetts State Police administered the oath of office in Enrique Delgado-Garcias final hours of life. He was surrounded by family, loved ones, and classmates during the bi-lingual ceremony, which culminated in him being pinned with his Trooper Badge, Tim McGuirk said.

Col. John Mawn Jr. of the state police said in a statement that his department is committed to providing support and resources to Trainee Delgado-Garcias family, friends, and fellow academy recruits in the coming days and weeks as they cope with this unimaginable loss.

GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for funeral expenses.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a statement saying she was heartbroken about the loss of Delgado-Garcia.

During a press conference on Monday District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. recalled how Delgado-Garcia would often stay late to help people while working at the county attorneys office.

Because of this close relationship, someone else will be handling this matter, said Early, surrounded by tearful members of Delgado-Garcias family and former co-workers nearby.

Theres no way this office can handle this. Everyone loved Enrique.

Early said detectives assigned to his office will continue to investigate, but they will work with whichever agency takes over.

He said he spoke with several entities in the state about taking over the case, but declined to name them. He said it would not be another district attorneys office.

My concern is that we cant investigate. I want it done by someone who doesnt have a stake in its outcome, he said.

We have a conflict, but we cant stop the investigation. Theyll continue to investigate as they would any other case, and will work with whoever takes this matter.
