Grim new details emerge about what may have caused the horror crash that killed four people on a country road - as two teenagers who died are identified

Police are investigating whether a head-on crash that killed two teenage best mates and a married couple was caused by one of the cars trying to overtake a road train.

Police are investigating whether a head-on crash that killed two teenage best mates and a married couple was caused by one of the cars trying to overtake a road train.

Lochie Jacobs, 18, and Joey Urban, 19, were passengers in a Toyota Hilux ute driven by a 23-year-old man when it collided with a van on Friday night in central west New South Wales

Emergency services rushed to the Newell Highway, about 35km south of Dubbo, after reports of the head-on collision at about 9.20pm.

The two teens were killed on impact, while the husband and wife in the van, both aged 57, also died at the scene. They are yet to be identified.

Crash investigators are now reportedly working to determine if either the ute or the van tried to overtake a road train over double lines while on a blind corner.

Officers arrived to find both vehicles completed destroyed beside the road.

The 23-year-old driver of the ute somehow escaped death and was rushed to hospital with leg injuries.

Tributes have since flooded in for Mr Jacobs and Mr Urban, whove been best friends since childhood.

Mr Urbans sister Maddie said he was the best brother a sister could ask for.

I love you so incredibly much, you will be missed by so many, she wrote.

Ill drink a few Tooheys for you.

Another wrote: Rest easy beautiful boys. The world is so cruel at times! Too young.

Two of the best blokes, best mates together forever, said another.

One woman remembered Mr Urban as one of the funniest buggers she had ever met.

Mr Jacobs was a novice bull-rider in the central west region.

Investigations into the crash are continuing.
