A father-of-three tragically lost his life after he was crushed by his own car while changing a tyre on the side of a busy highway.

Tavis Carter, 33, was driving along the Geelong Ring Road, in Highton, Geelong, on Friday morning when he stopped to change his tyre.

Hes understood to have tried to grab a wheel nut that had rolled underneath the car when the vehicle fell off the jack and crushed him.

Paramedics and police arrived at the scene but the 33-year-old was unable to be saved.

Tributes have since poured in for Mr Carter, who worked for fibre road wheel manufacturer Carbon Revolution.

He leaves behind his wife Angene and their three children aged seven, eight and 17.

Mr Carters sister-in-law, Stevie Thomas, said he was extremely dedicated to his wife and kids.

He never went to the pub, everything was about his family, she told the Geelong Advertiser.

They were his life. A lot of men would find it hard to live up to Tavis.

Mr Carters mother, Una Carter, also shared a heartfelt tribute.

We have lost a vital piece of our hearts and life will forever be changed, and less, for not having you in our lives our magnificent Tavis, she wrote.

We ache to hold you and hug you one more time.

We promise to look after Ange and our grandkids but will only ever be a sad comfort for the love and devotion you gave them for far too short a time.

His aunt, Netti Morrison, described him as selfless and unconditionally loving.

In the early hours of Friday morning a phone call would forever change the course of so many lives, she said.

Those words will be forever burnt into my mind because it was the most unimaginable devastating news I could ever expect.

I want to press rewind and change everything that happened, I want to take away all the heartache, loss and helplessness everyone that loves you is feeling, I want to make it all better and fix the hurt but I cant.

You are loved by so many people Tavis, because you too loved and were better for having had you in our lives.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Mr Carters family and cover funeral expenses.

It has raised just under $6,000 at the time of publication.
