Fury as Scottish schools told to offer gender neutral uniforms or risk breaking the law under woke guidelines from SNP run Scottish Government

Schools have been told to ensure pupils have the option of gender neutral uniforms or risk breaking the law under woke SNP government guidelines.

The guidance also warns against dress-down or non-uniform days – as pupils may be worried about standing out, their appearance or the additional stress these events might cause their parents or carers.

There are 42 references to gender in the 46-page document, including a warning that forcing transgender pupils to wear clothes which do not match their gender identity could be unlawful under equalities legislation.

Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth said the guidance aligns to wider measures to tackle child poverty – and even the need to address the climate emergency by stressing the importance of recycling uniforms.

Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: The SNP government is acting like a frightened rabbit caught in the headlights of political correctness.

Education is among the greatest failures of the SNP – and the enforcement of more brainwashing, woke ideology is unlikely to improve matters.

Scottish Tory education spokesman Liam Kerr said: Given the SNPs serial failures on education, Scotlands pupils, parents and teachers would be better served if the SNP focused as forensically on tackling the attainment gap, funding shortfalls and classroom violence as they are on what pupils should wear.

The new document states that forcing transgender young people to wear clothes which do not match their gender identity can be distressing for them, and may constitute discrimination under the Equality Act 2010.

It adds: If your school has a uniform, the school uniform policy should include a range of options to accommodate the needs of girls and boys and these should also accommodate the needs of transgender young people through gender-neutral options; this can be helpful for many young people.

Schools should not exclude transgender young people because of how they dress, unless it breaches health and safety regulations.

If your school doesnt have a school uniform, it should be clear that young people can wear what they want, including skirts, trousers, shorts, regardless of gender identity, as long as this complies with school guidelines.

Headteachers are told they should take action to ensure that their uniform and clothing policy does not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity and enables cultural expression.

The guidance adds: Schools should be mindful of language used when implementing uniform policy with individual students.

For example, schools should avoid using language such as modest or decent as these terms are stigmatising and often only applied to girls and young women.

The guidance also provides advice to schools on clothing for transgender young people participating in PE lessons.

This includes allowing pupils to wear sportswear which matches their expressed gender identity and considering alternative options for swimming.
