A woman is calling for shark nets to be removed from Australian beaches after her partner drowned when he became entangled in one. 

Jake Brown, 29, died while swimming with a mate on Sunday afternoon in an enclosed area at Paradise Point Parklands, on the Gold Coast. 

Witnesses say the pair were sitting on buoys marking the perimeter of the net when Mr Brown told his mate hold my beer before jumping off. 

But it is believed Mr Brown became tangled up in the net and he drowned before the current swept his body out to sea. 

It was recovered four hours later after a major search operation involving water police, helicopters, and divers.

Mr Browns partner Kama Robinson said shark nets should be removed from beaches and more life guards stationed on beaches to monitor the publics safety. 

The nets don’t not stop anything. All those nets did was stop my partner from being able to resurface, she told Daily Mail Australia.

They are dangerous. Sharp stuff gets caught in them. Sharks, jellyfish, sea snakes all get in regardless of the net - but it was my partner we lost this Christmas because of the shark net.

It will happen again.

Mr Brown was swimming in the enclosed area at Paradise Point Parklands (pictured) when he encountered trouble at 4pm on Sunday 

The government needs to stop funding things that are pointless. Go invest in proper life-saving training and train some lifeguards and put more money into first responders. 

Ms Robinson described Mr Brown as a very, very loved friend, partner, father, brother, son, grandson, [and] uncle.

He was a beautiful man who’s smile lit up every room he walked in [and] unfortunately we lost a beautiful human. 

The Point Paradise swimming enclosure has been closed for the foreseeable future in the wake of Mr Browns death. 

A witness said he saw Mr Brown and his friend sitting on the edge of the nets moments before the tragedy unfolded.

He said he called out in vain to warn the pair about the dangers.  

I said, "Stop!" You could see what was going to happen, the witness told the Courier Mail.

Rescuers could be seen examining the net amid the desperate search for Mr Brown on Sunday

He tried to jump off but the current took him, he came up once and I swam to him but then he went under the net.

It was so f***ing obvious what was going to happen, its why I yelled, "Dont!" Its so sad.

A Gold Coast City council spokesman urged the public to obey all safety signage when swimming.

Safety audits have been carried out at all our swimming enclosures and safety signage is in place, they said.

The City continues to work with police following the Paradise Point Parklands tragedy and an inspection of the net found it was damaged during the emergency response. The net will be replaced as soon as possible.

The City will continue to take any action necessary to ensure safety at the swimming enclosure and will consider any recommendations from relevant authorities.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
