Nashville police were called to an apartment on Lewis Street after a report came in that Knykholas Lane, a man wanted on domestic assault and false imprisonment charges, attempted to break into his ex-girlfriends home while armed at 1am.
When Eric Zeigler, the responding officer, arrived near the scene, he spotted Lane walking along the roadway and approached him in his patrol car.
The intense body-cam footage captured Ziegler repeatedly ordering Lane to stop running - which he ignored - before the officer parked his SUV in a grassy area and hopped out to chase him.
But seconds after the on-foot chase began, Lane turned around and fired a shot at the officer - leading Zeigler to hide behind a tree and return fire which ultimately struck the suspect in the butt and leg, knocking him to the ground.
The footage then captured Ziegler turning on his flashlight and approaching Lane with his gun still drawn - ordering him to lay flat on his stomach as backup officers arrived to retrieve the gun and cuff the suspect.
He struck her in the face, assaulted her and held her in a bedroom before fleeing last Thursday, Don Aaron, a spokesman for the department, said during a news conference while informing the public of the recent related incident. The victim took out an order of protection but he has since been in the wind.
Lane, who has been on supervised probation for a felony aggravated burglary conviction just last year - was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
