Dramatic moment Disney Cruise rescues sinking catamaran off the coast of Bermuda

The extraordinary moment a Disney cruise ship saved four people from a sinking catamaran was captured on video.

A 50-foot catamaran called the Serenity was approximately 265 miles from the Bermuda coast when it started sinking into the water on Sunday morning, according to the US Coast Guard. 

After the passengers called for help, the Coast Guard broadcasted their request and a Disney Treasure ship was the closest vessel to the sinking Serenity, just about 80 miles away. 

Video showed the cruise ship launching a life boat that successfully saved all the people onboard the catamaran within a few hours. No injuries have been reported.

We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril, Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said told ABC 7.

The Disney Treasure, the cruise lines newest ship, was 80 miles away from the sinking catamaran

The cruise was headed from Eemshaven, Netherlands to Port Canaveral, Florida when the catamarans escape hatch gasket failed, causing the the boat to start sinking, ABC 7 reported.

The passengers on the damaged boat were a married couple, their daughter and a cousin, aged from 24 to 74, a Coast Guard official told TMZ. 

The Treasure is the newest addition to the Disney cruise line, according to the Disney Cruise website.

It will set sail with vacationers for the first time in December. 

The 4,000-passenger ship, which measures 1,119ft (341m) in length and weighs approximately 144,000 gross tons, was built at Germanys Meyer Werft shipyard.

First-of-its-kind features on board include a restaurant inspired by the film Coco, an Aladdin-themed grand hall and a Zootopia-inspired sweet shop. There are 1,256 staterooms.

Catamarans are generally considered one of the safest kinds of yachts, with one Florida woman ditching a traditional home and living in one. 

Sierra Swezey, lives on a 39ft catamaran with her husband, Billy, and their dog, Jetty, and they have built a loyal social media following thanks to their water-based adventures.

In one TikTok, Sierra gives viewers a tour of their modern catamaran.

On the starboard hull she showcases a guest room, a functional kitchen, another guest room currently used to store their surfboards, and a bathroom where the tap doubles as an extendable shower head to save space.

Moving back upstairs, she shows the salon or main living area where the table goes down to make a huge bed.

All four passengers were saved and no injuries have been reported 

The catamaran-cruise ship incident occurred just four months after a humpback whale breached and sank a ship off the coast of New Hampshire. 

Nearby boats watched the scene unfold, with one man making a mayday call to the Coast Guard.

In the call, the unknown man can be heard saying: Mayday, mayday, flipped vessel, two passengers safe on another vessel, boat sinking.

There were two people on board, they are currently on another vessel, they are still out here with us, everybody is safe.

According to a statement by the US Coast Guard, the whale was not injured in the encounter either.
