BREAKING NEWS Terrifying scenes at Cancun resort as police clash with suspects in pool-side drug sting

Resort guests in Cancun were subjected to terrifying scenes as police clashed with a violent criminal group.

At least one person has been reported dead with varying reports from local media about the scale of injuries. 

The incident took place around the pool area at the Riu Hotel in Costa Mujeres, a popular resort in the tourist destination.

It is understood undercover officers were working in the area in a bid to catch members of a criminal organization who were trying to sell drugs at the resort.

Staff had reportedly been repeatedly threatened by the group and ordered to provide services as the criminals attempted to distribute drugs in the resort, Sol Quintana Roo reported.

Undercover officers were set upon with a hail of bullets

One local report stated: Weapons were seized, one of which was exclusively for military use. An operation is underway to capture more involved parties

The officers were reportedly set upon by two criminals, who opened fire on them near the pool at the resort.

One of the criminals was reportedly shot dead. Pictures show others being taken into custody, as horrified guests watched on. 

Tourists in and around the pool area and nearby beach reportedly ran for cover as the gunfight broke out. 

One local report stated: Weapons were seized, one of which was exclusively for military use. An operation is underway to capture more involved parties.
