BREAKING NEWS One dead, six hospitalized after man sets upon group of children with meat cleaver, prompting police shooting

A person is dead and at least six others injured following a police-involved shooting in New York.

The shooting happened after a man attacked several children with a meat cleaver in Bensonhurst, law enforcement sources told amNewYork.

It happened at about 10:30am Sunday, they said - as footage from the crime scene continues to circulate.

It shows officers crowding in the vicinity of 17th Avenue and 84th Street, after at least one discharged their weapon at the suspect. A photo from the grisly scene showed a female victim covered head-to-toe in blood being ushered into an ambulance.

The insiders said EMS removed one adult and two children the suspect had attacked from the scene, with one of the young ones currently in critical condition at Maimonides Medical Center.

The suspect was shot by cops during the encounter, though it remains unclear whether he was the lone casualty.

The FDNY confirmed as much in a statement to News 12 Long Island, while saying the total patient count stands at seven. Six survivors were taken to a total of two hospitals, they told the outlet.

amNewYork initially reported it was the unnamed suspect who succumbed to his wounds, before amending their report Sunday to state he was seriously injured.

I saw a guy come out on a stretcher. he wasn’t moving, his shirt was all bloody and he was handcuffed to the stretcher. His eyes were rolling back in his head, eyewitness Humberto Hureta told the station, adding, I never saw anything like it.

Law enforcement sources further told The New York Post the victims included several children who ranged in age from 8 to 16.
