Australian is arrested in paradise after Interpol warrant was issued after he allegedly fled the country while charged with rape

An Australian accused rapist has been arrested in Thailand after allegedly fleeing Australia while facing charges.

Helio Taiyang Richardson, 62, was arrested at a resort on idyllic Koh Phangan island in the south east of the country.

Thai police shared video footage of the moment Richardson was arrested and paraded before the media. 

Richardson, a kinesiologist, was charged with rape in Queensland in 2018.

He is reported to have left Australia before court proceedings began in 2022. 

He has since been extradited to Sydney and will travel from there back to Queensland.

Queensland Police confirmed it was working with Thai authorities to extradite a 62-year-old man.
