Another 52 people were injured on Sunday night when a Russian missile hit a residential building in Ukraines northeastern region of Sumy, Ukraines emergency services and military said.

Sunday evening for the city of Sumy became hell, a tragedy that Russia brought to our land, Volodymyr Artyukh, the head of the Sumy military administration said in a post on the administrations Telegram messaging channel.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Telegram that rescuers and all necessary services continued to work at the scene and psychologists were providing assistance to those affected.

More than 400 people were evacuated, the Service added.

Pictures posted on the Services Telegram showed firefighters battling a blaze consuming cars and rescuers carrying people out of a building. One photo showed the multi-storey building with nearly all windows blown out and its facade damaged.

Both Kyiv and Moscow deny targeting civilians in their strikes on each others territory. But thousands have died since early 2022 in Russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the vast majority of them Ukrainians.

The attack on Sumy came after Vladimir Putins troops pounded Ukraines power grid in a devastating attack with 120 missiles and 90 drones.

Various types of drones were deployed, he said, including Iranian-made Shaheds, as well as cruise, ballistic and aircraft-launched ballistic missiles.

Ukrainian defenses shot down 144 out of a total of 210 air targets, Ukraines air force reported later on Sunday.

The enemys target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine. Unfortunately, there is damage to objects from hits and falling debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone attack, two people were killed and six others were injured, including two children, Zelensky said.

Two more people were killed in the Odesa region, where the attack damaged energy infrastructure and disrupted power and water supplies, said local Gov. Oleh Kiper.

Both victims were employees of Ukraines state-owned power grid operator, Ukrenergo, the company said hours later.

The combined drone and missile attack was the most powerful in three months, according to the head of Kyivs City Military Administration, Serhii Popko.

One person was injured after the roof of a five-story residential building caught fire in Kyivs historic center, according to Popko.

A thermal power plant operated by private energy company DTEK was seriously damaged, the company said.

Terrified Ukrainian civilians were seen cowering in bomb shelters in Kyiv on Saturday night while air defences shot down dozens of missiles severe damage was inflicted on the power grid.

The countrys energy operator DTEK announced emergency power cuts at around 7am UK time on Sunday morning affecting the Kyiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions following overnight drone strikes.

It said shortly thereafter thermal power plants had been struck by Putins latest fusillade. The level of damage was not immediately clear.

Air defences were deployed overnight to intercept drones in Kyiv as residents were urged to take cover, while missiles bound for the west of the stricken country prompted NATO to send out its warplanes to assist.

Due to the massive attack by the Russian Federation using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles on objects located, among others, in western Ukraine, Polish and allied [NATO] aircraft have begun operating in our airspace, said a statement from the Polish operational command.

On-duty fighter pairs were scrambled, and the ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness. The steps taken are aimed at ensuring safety in areas bordering the threatened areas.

Also on Sunday, President Joe Biden authorised for the first time the use of US-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine to strike inside Russia, after extensive lobbying by Ukrainian officials.

The weapons are likely to be used in response to North Koreas decision to send thousands of troops to support Russia in the Kursk region where Ukraine mounted a military incursion over the summer.

It is the second time the US has permitted the use of Western weapons inside Russian territory within limits after permitting the use of HIMARS systems, a shorter-range weapon, to stem Russias advance in Kharkiv region in May.
