Millions of Australians are being urged to prepare for heavy rain and storms this week as a severe weather system sweeps across much of the country.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning that a low-pressure trough will cover most of Australia, bringing widespread cloud, rain, and storms.
The wet weather system is expected to impact all areas, stretching from Northern Western Australia to southern Queensland and southern Victoria, starting Tuesday.
Early in the week, showers and thunderstorms will target central, eastern, southern and southeastern Australia on Monday and Tuesday. Severe thunderstorms are likely in parts of NSW and [Queensland] on both days and are also possible in other states, Ben Domensino from Weatherzone explained.
Storms will become more focused on a broad arc stretching across Australias eastern and northern states and down into the WA interior through the middle of the week.
Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra will all be at risk of severe thunderstorm activity on Wednesday.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue then over Australias east and north on Thursday and Friday, while also extending towards the south of WA due to the passage of a cold front.
He explained the wet weather system is set to combine with deepening low pressure troughs, which could lead to widespread thunderstorms into the weekend and early next week for most of the country.
