Virgin Media was the second most-complained about provider, followed by EE.

When broken down, how companies handled complaints came out as the key reason why customers would contact Ofcom.

A substantial 38 per cent of complaints made about NOW Broadband fell into this category, against an industry average of 31 per cent.

On average, 35 per cent of complaints were attributed to faults, servicing and provisioning, while 19 per cent were made about billing, pricing and charges.

For mobile providers, O2 was the most complained-about service, while Tesco came out on top, followed by EE and Vodafone.

Eight in 100,000 complaints were made about O2 compared to just one per 100,000 for Tesco Mobile.

Pay-TV providers were also in the firing line, with both EE and Virgin Media coming out as the most complained-about providers.

They both racked up nine complaints per 100,000 compared to just one complaint per 100,000 for Sky.

Ofcom also released figures for landline providers.

EE was the most complained-about landline provider, with complaints increasing on the previous quarter.

The firm racked up 15 complaints per 100,000.

Customers mostly complained about faults, services and getting their connections set up.

Utility Warehouse generated no complaints at all about its landline service, followed by Sky (two complaints per 100,000) and Vodafone (three complaints per 100,000).

Overall, complaints about broadband, landline and mobile services fell slightly while complaints about pay-TV services stayed the same.

Customer service was the biggest driver of complaints around broadband, mobile and paid-for TV providers.

But for landline services, the set up, provision and fixing of faults were deemed as important as customer service.

Fergal Farragher, Ofcoms policy director, said: While complaints numbers remained broadly the same during this quarter, were pleased to see slight falls in complaints across some of the services covered by these figures.

Communications services are now essential to our daily lives and customers deserve a high level of service.

We call on providers to improve their performance in areas in which they are currently falling short.
