Nigel Farage was accused of inflaming people and amplifying false information following the Southport stabbings during a fierce war of words with Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid.

The Reform UK leader wanted to talk politics on Brexit and immigration during an appearance on the ITV breakfast show - but it was not long before the conversation took a more fiery turn.

Reid took target as she said Farage had been criticised by a number of people, including Conservative party leadership candidate Tom Tugendhat, for being irresponsible and dangerous.

She referred to a video he posted on social media claiming police had withheld the truth about the alleged perpetrator of the Southport attack.

The presenter reminded him there was an ongoing legal process and to be mindful of what he said.

But Farage nodded and quickly cut in: We always hide behind that, dont we?

Reid retorted: Thats the rule of law in this country, that we dont compromise someones fair trial and allow the families of those whove suffered to hear the truth.

Farage said: We hide behind this again and again...

But a frustrated Reid replied: Why do you say "hide behind"? You are fully in support of the rule of law, you know what Contempt of Court is.

She then reminded him again: Please dont veer into Contempt of Court.

As she picked him up again on his assertion that the truth was being withheld, Farage remained unrepetant.

Of course its being withheld, he said.

Farage went on to compare the Southport attacks with the 2023 Nottingham mass killings carried out by Valdo Calocane.

In that instance, doctors revealed at the trial that they had previously advised Calocane was a danger.

Reid accused him of conflating two separate cases and said: Those are two completely different cases. Thats not how the rule of law works.

Pointing his finger, Farage said: The public deserve to know the truth.

He continued: Why do you think the riots happened in the way they did? Because there was a vacuum, people were not being told the truth.

Reids co-presenter Ed Balls jumped in and Farage had helped inflame the rumours, which resulted in people rioting as false rumours swirled that the suspect was an immigrant.

Youre a Member of Parliament, youve got responsibility now, you cant just behave like some pundit on some TV show, he said.

Farage maintained he was in the right however: Had the government police done what I asked those riots would not have been anything like as bad.

Reid reminded him that with power comes responsibility.

Having the last word, she added:  You cant just put false information out to the public.
