Netflix condemned by premier for 'distasteful' drama which appears to mimic Tasmanian jumping castle tragedy that killed six children

A new Netflix drama which appears to have been inspired by the bouncy castle tragedy that killed six Australian children in Tasmania has come under fire.

A new Netflix drama which appears to have been inspired by the bouncy castle tragedy that killed six Australian children in Tasmania has come under fire.

The Accident, set in Santa Cruz in Mexico, follows a close-knit community after a bouncy castle is blown away by strong winds at a childrens birthday party.

The 10-part series was released on the global streaming giant last month and has since received a score of 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the similarities to the 2021 tragedy in his state were distasteful and that a massive insensitivity was on display.

On December 16, 2021, at Tasmanias Hillcrest Primary School during end-of-year celebrations, primary schoolers Chace Harrison, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Zane Mellor, Addison Stewart, Jye Sheehan and Peter Dodt were killed.

A jumping castle and zorb balls were blown 10metres into the air by a wind gust while the children were inside. Another three children were also injured.

Netflix should apologise to the (Hillcrest) community, Mr Rockliff told the Tasmanian House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Netflix said via its website Tadum that The Accident is fictional and not based on a real life event and pointed to data from the American Meteorological Society showing similar incidents that have happened in the US.

Viewer reaction to the series has been mixed with some claiming it was sad but good and others saying poor production quality let it down and questioned whether it was exploitative of the Tasmanian victims.

In November 2023, Taz-Zorb, the firm running the jumping castle at Hillcrest, was charged with an offence under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 in that it allegedly failed to comply with its health and safety duty, putting children in danger.

The companys operator has pleaded not guilty and the matter is set for a two-week trial in November this year.

The students had been celebrating their primary school graduation when the jumping castle was suddenly swept upwards, with children still bouncing on it. All were aged between 11 and 12.

Australians raised $1.4million for the families of the victims, although the money wasnt released until March, 2022.

As a result of the tragedy, several organisations have banned the use of all inflatables on their properties, including the Tasmanian Department of Education.

The Netflix series The Accident is directed by Klych López and Gracia Querejeta and written by Leonardo Padrón.

The Spanish telenovela sees Daniela Daniela (Ana Claudia Talancón) and Emiliano (Sebastián Martínez) throw a birthday party for their son, Rodrigo.

However things take a tragic turn when the wind picks up and a horror accident lifts up the bouncy castle and causes the deaths of three children.

The IDMB description reads: A tragic accident radically changes the lives of three families, triggering a terrible spiral of guilt, resentment, and violence, that will lead them to explore the outermost edges of pain, endurance, and mercy.
