A phone recording captures the moment the man, wearing a black raincoat, swings the blade at the glass door to the establishment on Kirkham Street, Plumstead, South East London.

He threatens to knife the door again but is unable to enter the building as the door is held shut by the staff members trapped inside.

Shouts of are you mad? can regularly be heard from those on the other side of the glass during the stressful ordeal on Tuesday.

A police officer, armed with a taser, attended the scene after reports of a fight and arrested a man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and remains in custody, the force said.

The Metropolitan Police said enquiries into the circumstances are on-going and asked anyone with information to come forward.

A Met spokesperson said: On Tuesday, 19 November police were called to Kirkham Street, SE18 at 19:13hrs following reports of a fight.

Officers attended the scene and arrested a man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries, he now remains in custody.
