Road worker Jason Dobney filmed the massive feline as it was hunting a rabbit, which he said was way bigger than a Rottweiler.

He spotted the animal as he was about to start work on a road repair and believes it was up to six-feet-long, with a two-foot long tail.

The 44-year-old road worker encountered the large panther-like creature in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

There have been reports about big cats in The Fens for decades.

Mr Dobney said: I do roadworks and it was walking through the fields. It was six-foot long and looked like a panther.

We spotted it from 100-feet away and it looked big even then. The sheer size of it was crazy.

He added: Ive seen big domestic cats and this was nothing like that. I was doing a road repair and sat in a layby waiting for traffic management to set up when I saw it prowling along the field.

I didnt want to get too close as it was way bigger than a Rottweiler dog. Ive never seen one like it.

I have seen many cats from a distance and the sheer size of this thing is nothing like Ive ever seen before.

No way was it a house cat.

Other locals said they definitely thought the huge black animal was a big cat.

Kerry Whiting said: That is way bigger than a standard moggy.

Jason Evans added: It could be a hybrid.

It doesnt look quite right for a panther but looks way larger than a normal domestic cat.

Daz Tinsley, an expert on big cats said: Its a bit small but these big cats that are out there arent as big as everybody thinks.

While there are officially no big cats living in the wild in Britain, some insist theyve spotted leopards, lynxes or pumas on the prowl.

Experts have admitted a few big cats are likely to be living wild in rural Britain. They are mostly thought to have been exotic pets which have since escaped.

Big cats have been reportedly sighted in various places around the UK, from Aberdeen in Scotland to Treviscoe in Cornwall.

In February this year, a 71-year-old pensioner allegedly spotted a large big cat roaming a residential area in Kirriemuir, Angus.

Other sightings include a motorist who spotted a big cat prowling through the Worcestershire countryside in what could be a fresh sighting of the infamous Worcestershire Panther.
