Keir Starmer is warned bleating unions could block NHS reforms but PM vows to take on sabre rattling likes of BMA - and anyone who stands in his way will go the same way as Jeremy Corbyn

Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to take on and defeat health unions that try to block NHS reforms.

The Prime Minister said he is determined to make changes and suggested any medical staff who get in the way will face the same fate as Jeremy Corbyn.

Sir Keir yesterday outlined how he will slash waiting lists and improve access to care with the biggest reimagining of the health service since its birth in 1948.

It will involve shifting billions of pounds of funding from inefficient hospitals to community care, a greater role for new technology and a new focus on preventing people becoming unwell in the first place.

But he admitted he expects to face pockets of resistance from people who will seek to derail the plans out of self-interest, rather than for the benefit of patients.

It came as Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the British Medical Association (BMA) should stop sabre-rattling and work with the Government to improve services.

And leading scientist Professor Sir John Bell warned that doctors in the BMA have been a major drag on reform of healthcare.

Sir John, who served as regius professor of medicine at the University of Oxford for more than two decades, said the stranglehold the medical profession had over the healthcare system had to be broken.

Sir Keir yesterday delivered a major speech on the future of the NHS at the Kings Fund think tank, a day after Lord Darzi published the findings of his rapid review into the service.

The pioneering surgeon and former Labour health minister warned it is in a critical condition and called for urgent action to turn its fortunes around.

The findings of the review, commissioned by Mr Streeting, will underpin the Governments ten-year-plan for the NHS, which will be published later this year.

Conservatives have accused Labour of trying to chase headlines while laying the groundwork for tax rises at the Budget and foolishly offering junior doctors generous pay rises with no commitment to increase productivity. Sir Keir admitted his reforms would take a decade to implement but said his track record in reshaping organisations showed he could burst through institutional resistance.

The Prime Minister told the audience of health leaders and policy experts the Government needs to fix the plumbing before turning on the taps, adding: No more money without reform.

Meanwhile, Sir John told the BBCs Today Podcast: The doctors in the BMA have been a major drag on reform of healthcare. The stranglehold the medical profession has on the way we run a healthcare system is going to have to be sorted.

Professor Phil Banfield, chair of BMA council, said his union is having positive conversations with the health secretary.

He added: The BMA has long been at the forefront of calling for reform in the health service, and consistently works to find new solutions to improve patient care.
