The death toll stands at 16 after Milton battered The Sunshine State, tearing its way through communities with winds of 75mph - only two weeks after the misery left by Hurricane Helene.

The Category 3 storm hit Siesta Key, a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota at around 8.30pm local time, according to the National Hurricane Center,  before making its way further inland.

As insured losses are estimated to be between $30billion and $60billion in the wake of the catastrophe, the Met Office has revealed the post-tropical cyclone could also affect the UK.

Milton, which left around 2.6 million homes and businesses in Florida without power in the early hours of this morning, is anticipated to weaken as it ventures into open waters, according to the Met Office.

However as the remnants pass by the Bermuda it is expected to transform into an extratropical storm.

Beyond this, the remnant is likely to either be absorbed into a frontal zone or dissipate in situ in the subtropical Atlantic,  the forecaster explained.

If the remnants of Milton end up in the Atlantic as a weakening feature, it could cause some forecast uncertainty next week.

As it currently stands most of the UK is set to experience some autumnal sunshine across large parts of the country.

However unsettled weather is set to hit parts of Scotland this evening, with bouts of heavy showers set to hit the region.

Areas of Wales and central England, are anticipated to become slightly chillier as night descends with  temperatures set to drop as low as 7C (44.6C) in some parts of the country.

It comes as shocking images emerged of the disaster revealing the storm had tore through the roof of Tropicana Field Stadium.

Construction sites in Florida are also likely ruined after several cranes were reported to have been toppled, smashing into buildings and new developments.

At least 117 tornado warnings were issued in communities across the state overnight and into this morning, with dozens reported to have materialised and wrought havoc.

Almost 3 million homes and businesses were without power Wednesday night in Florida, while about 125 homes were destroyed beyond repair however this number is expected to increase.

About 80,000 people stayed in shelters and thousands of others fled after authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders across 15 Florida counties with a total population of about 7.2 million people.

Many people also expressed relief that wasn’t worse as the system spared Tampa a direct hit, and the lethal storm surge that scientists feared never materialized.

The man, who has not been identified, was aboard a small fishing vessel when he was caught in the hurricane as it barreled across the sea and headed for the Florida coast on Wednesday afternoon.

The brutal storm whipped up horrific waves that smashed into his boat and disabled it, leaving him with no choice but to place a panicked call to the coastguard station in St Petersburg around 6.45pm local time.

Coastguard officials lost contact with him and were unable to mount a rescue on Wednesday with Milton bearing down on Floridas west coast, sparking fears he would perish on the raging seas overnight.

But with the hurricane having ripped inland by Thursday morning, a coastguard helicopter embarked on a last-ditch search and rescue mission - and miraculously located the desperate mariner floating some 30 miles out to sea, using an open cooler as a floatation device.
