A horrified TikTok user discovered that a malfunctioning charging cord almost burned her house down.

Jules, who goes by @homesteadingmommasaga on TikTok, revealed in a recent video she posted on the social media platform that a USB-C charging cable wouldve potentially started a house fire.

The TikToker explained that she was getting ready to leave her house right before she began to smell something burning.

Something was definitely hot... Im looking around, and Im freaking out because I could smell something, Jules said.

Jules explained her situation in further detail to commenters, some of which noted that chargers could burn houses down

Jules revealed in her videos comment section that her USB-C charging cable was fairly new and hardly used.

Jules proceeded to explain the mishap in her September 8 video and how it all started with the decision to use it to charge her sons tablet.

According to the TikToker, her son unplugged the cord and left it on a blanket.

The charging cable had been laying on top of the blanket for about 4 hours. It randomly started burning when I came in the house, Jules wrote.

The horrified homeowner then showed off her now-bent USB-C cord and the hole it made in what she said was a regular blanket.

I had looked at it while sitting on the couch hours earlier. I just didnt think to remove the cable end off the blanket, she wrote.

She also revealed that her son cried once he saw the hole since the blanket was a present his aunt gave him.

Jules plans to get a new charger, and she urged other TikTok users to start unplugging unnecessary cords to avoid potential house fires.

It was the first time this had ever happened to me. Several people have posted and said their house has burned down or they had the same thing happen, she wrote.

USB-C charging cables, commonly used for electronics like iPads and iPhones, are a potential fire hazard if they are damaged or left plugged in after an item is completely charged.

The cords location can also make a difference, especially since soft surfaces - like Jules blanket - can cause heat to build up, leading to a fire.

TikTok users were grateful to learn something new, and more than one person brought up ideas on how to avoid a house fire.

I always unplug from the wall. A phobia of mine, before I leave the home, a commenter wrote.

Another person commented: I plug all electronics in the kitchen. Im afraid of them in the bedroom at night. Equivalent to smoking a cigarette in bed back in the day.

Others have explained their own household horror stories due to their usage of charging cables, and at least two commenters insisted their chargers were brand new when they started to overheat.

That happened to me a few years ago! The charger was sitting in the carpet. Scared me too, wrote a TikToker.
