Former England captain David Beckham has revealed he has a penchant for dressing up as television characters - much to the delight of his wife, Victoria.

The ex-Manchester United star – known for his outlandish fashion sense during his glittering playing career - said he would occasionally take on the persona of those featured in his favourite television programmes, including gritty Birmingham-based drama Peaky Blinders and neo-Western series Yellowstone.

He brought laughter from the audience at the Royal Television Society London conference when asked to recall his favourite shows.

The ex-Real Madrid and LA Galaxy midfielder said: You know, I grew up in the 70s, 80s, 90s. So Im used to watching Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers and Minder and things like that.

But now I love Peaky Blinders, and Victoria will always laugh at me because whatever TV show that Im watching, I kind of morph into a character.

So Peaky Blinders - not any particular character, but just, I just wore everything Peaky Blinders, and then we watched Yellowstone, and I was a cowboy, which she kind of liked.

The 49-year-old sports star-turned-business owner has won plaudits for his documentaries, including his eponymous biography series, which he admitted he hated doing.

The series, which aired last year, made no direct reference to a historic affair with Rebecca Loos and did not admit to any guilt, but did address the aftermath.

The matter was not touched on at the conference.

Beckham told delegates in London today: It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was going to make it - there were a few reasons why we wanted to make it, but I wasnt ready.

When I retired, I wasnt ready to talk about my career and talk about, you know, what happened over that time.

But after a while and through the pandemic - I was thinking, coming up to the 10 year anniversary of my retirement from football, so we started to discuss it.

And I cant lie, it worried me, and it made me nervous. It made Victoria nervous, because as much as people think that they know everything about us, really, and we dont really let that kind of those doors open to our house, and I knew it was the right time.

I hated probably almost every moment of making quite every moment. I wouldnt say I hated it. I would just say it was very difficult.

We loved the results.

This was a time when I was playing in my career that there wasnt any social media. Everything that was said about me, I knew what was being said, but the boss would turn around to me, Sir Alex Ferguson, and say: Dont read the papers today. Do yourself a favour. Dont read the papers. Go out there and play.

And thats really kind of all that Id that I kind of saw.

He said director Fisher Stevens made him feel uncomfortable, and said he didnt see the documentary itself until the premiere.

Netflix last month announced a follow-up series focusing on fashion designer and former pop star Victoria.

David told the RTS conference: Actually, I am really excited about this one with Victoria, because she is an amazing woman.

She is a strong, driven, passionate person that has gone from being a Spice Girl, and to be respected in this industry is very tough.

And shes worked hard for the last 17, 18 years on her business, and all of a sudden shes having the success that she really deserves.

And no one really sees what she does, and no one really sees the amount of work that she puts in it - shes over everything from where people sit at the shows to what they wear to everything that goes into her business. Shes over every single piece.

And I want people to see that. And again, it was hard to convince her to do this. Its an exciting time, because I think shes gonna do something thats very special, and people are gonna see her personality and just her work ethic.
