Shocking footage has emerged of a truck driver heading down a busy Melbourne motorway with a dangerous modification to its rig.

Shocking footage has emerged of a truck driver heading down a busy Melbourne motorway with a dangerous modification to its rig.

Huge spikes protruded from the rims of the front wheel as the truck made its way through heavy traffic down a highway.

The video titled What a knob was posted to Reddit this week, with Victoria Police saying the truck modification was illegal.

A police spokesperson said they were following up inquiries about the truck and advised people not to make modifications to their vehicles that were unlawful.

Under VicRoads vehicle standards, it is illegal to have anything protruding from the wheel wider than the mudguard.

When in the straight-ahead position, the wheels and tyres do not project beyond the extreme width of the mudguards when viewed from above, VicRoads stated.

The original Reddit poster warned of the potential injuries the trucks spiked wheels could cause.

This was slightly higher than the sill on an ordinary road car, so would slice right through a car door into your kids hip.

They added sarcastically, Seems like a great idea.

Social media users were quick to point out that the modifications were illegal in Victoria, with one person commenting, Absolutely not legal in Victoria.

No part of the rotating wheel can extend past the guard when wheels are pointed straight ahead.

Also no sharp protrusions, another agreed.

Legal on a Roman chariot at the Colosseum, a person said.

Some Reddit users said the wheel modifications were made poorly and came off easily, destroying tyres that ran over them, while others said they were made of plastic.

Others likened the wheel hub to something you would see in a Mad Max movie, not on city streets.

Stop trying to make Mad Max a thing, one viewer said.

Another added: Mad Max: West Gate Bridge.

A third wrote: Im living where they shot Mad Max ... I drive over the hill from the movie every day. I would laugh if I saw anything like this on there.

Wowee, you cross that bridge and go down the road about five kms and you’re dead smack in a post apocalyptic dystopia - Avalon Beach. F**k me that joint is eerie, another wrote.

Another Reddit user jokingly posted people with truck nuts should not be shamed.

Theyre a harmless way for people with bad taste to express themselves and if we go about accusing them of being insecure about their masculinity or whatever then we end up with s**t like this.
