Angela Rayner has admitted not paying enough tax on her second home in a dramatic move leaving her political future in limbo.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Housing Secretary, claimed she received inaccurate tax advice amid intense scrutiny over her purchase of a flat in Hove.

Ms Rayner told Sky News she she has referred herself to the independent adviser on ministerial standards and had spoken to her family about quitting.

Her admission comes following reports she saved £40,000 in stamp duty on the flat because she removed her name from the deeds of a family property in her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency, meaning the Hove property is the only property she owns.
